Lighting control and motorised shading affect more than the choice of a keypad or fabric. They influence ceiling and joinery details, window treatments, electrical provision and the way a client uses each room. Bring these decisions into the design discussion while the relevant details can still be coordinated.

Begin with room use

Describe the desired lighting and privacy conditions for everyday living, entertaining, television and bedtime. Identify which windows need privacy, glare control or room-darkening treatment. These are design requirements to resolve with the selected fabric, fitting and room conditions; the name of a control system alone does not establish the finished result.

Agree visible controls and lighting interfaces

Coordinate keypad positions, finishes and labelling with door swings, joinery and the electrical layout. Confirm the lighting schedule and driver information before deciding control interfaces. Scene descriptions are most useful when they describe what the client expects to happen, so the installer can translate them into an agreed scope.

Resolve shading details before manufacture

• Window information: opening dimensions, mounting conditions, obstructions and access for final measurement.
• Appearance and privacy: fabric selection, samples, sight lines, intended use and any expectations about light gaps.
• Concealment and access: pockets, pelmets, curtain tracks, removable details and space to service the chosen equipment.
• Electrical and control provision: the requirements of the exact shade or track, agreed cable routes and integration with the specified control system.

Keep responsibilities clear

Agree who owns final measurements, fabric approval, electrical work, pockets and joinery, installation, programming and commissioning.
