A fitting's appearance is one part of the decision. Consider where the light falls, the surfaces it illuminates and what someone sees from the usual sitting or standing position.

A practical selection checklist

• Match the beam and output to the task and room geometry.
• Review glare and reflections on screens or polished surfaces.
• Compare colour appearance using real samples.
• Check the intended lamp/driver and dimming combination.
• Keep access for maintenance and replacement in the design.

Test the combination before repeating it

A sample fitting and driver can reveal issues that a catalogue image cannot. Review the intended dimming range and the effect on finishes before a large order. Avoid treating lighting fittings as a remedy for medical, sleep or mood conditions.

Compare one fitting from the sofa

Before repeating a downlight throughout a sitting room, review a sample at the intended position. Sit where the client will read or watch television, then compare the visible light source, reflections on the screen and illumination on the book. Repeat at the intended low scene level with the actual driver. Record the preferred sample and any glare or dimming problem. This is a proposed sample-review method, not a measured result from a completed project.
