Lighting control design, installation and support

Lighting control works best when circuits, loads, drivers, wiring, keypads and programming are designed together. London Electricals supports new projects, retrofits and inherited systems.

New build

Coordinate the lighting-control architecture with the electrical design, lighting specification, joinery, shading, network and wider technology systems before first fix.

Refurbishment

Assess what can be retained, where new cabling and panels can be introduced, and how the work fits the wider construction programme.

Retrofit

Start with the existing wiring and room controls. A wireless or hybrid route may reduce disruption, but only after load and device compatibility are checked.

Commercial

Clarify zoning, occupancy and daylight requirements, interfaces, commissioning responsibilities and the evidence needed at handover.

Existing-system fault

Identify the processor, panels, modules, keypads, loads, drivers, programming access and fault pattern before deciding whether repair or upgrade is justified.

Which lighting-control system is right for the property?

The answer depends on the building and the work, not only the preferred keypad. The number and type of circuits, central or local dimming, available wiring, shading, integration, project scale, programming needs and long-term support all affect the decision.

Lutron HomeWorks

A whole-property route to consider where the project needs coordinated control, central or distributed equipment, detailed scene programming and integration with other building systems.

RadioRA 3 or an existing RA2 Select installation

A wireless or retrofit-oriented route to assess where rewiring is limited. Product availability, regional support and compatibility must be checked for the exact project before a proposal is made.

Rako

A wired, wireless or hybrid lighting-control route often considered for residential work and existing Rako installations. The installed generation, modules and programming access matter when repair or expansion is required.

Lutron Vive and Athena

Commercial control routes with different project, integration and commissioning requirements. The specification should follow the building use, lighting design, controls responsibility and required handover information.

The electrical design is part of the control system

A reliable result begins with a verified circuit and load schedule. Each fitting and driver needs a suitable control method, with minimum and maximum loads, inrush, dimming curve, neutral and earth requirements, emergency arrangements and interface responsibilities understood.

Panels, modules and processors need coordinated locations, heat management, access and labelling. Keypads, sensors, shades and integrations need the correct power, control and data paths. These decisions should be resolved before equipment is ordered or ceilings and joinery are closed.

From brief to handover

1. Establish the brief

Define rooms, circuits, scenes, interfaces, users, project constraints and the required handover.

2. Confirm the electrical basis

Review loads, drivers, dimming protocols, wiring topology, panel space, power, data and containment.

3. Coordinate and document

Issue or review the schedules, keypad intent, panel information and responsibilities needed by the design and construction team.

4. Install and programme

Complete the agreed installation and programming scope, then test scenes, devices and interfaces against the approved intent.

5. Handover and support

Provide the agreed records, access information and user guidance, with future support boundaries made clear.

Repairs, upgrades and system takeovers

London Electricals can assess lighting-control systems installed by another company. The survey records the installed platform, processor generation, panel modules, keypads, connected loads, symptoms, integrations and the availability of project files or credentials.

Some faults can be isolated to a device, load or driver; others are symptoms of wiring, programming, network or wider system issues. The assessment separates known facts from assumptions before repair, upgrade or takeover options are proposed.

Lighting-control questions

Which lighting-control system is right for my property?

It depends on project scale, circuit and load types, wiring options, keypad and shading requirements, integrations, programming complexity and the support expected after handover. Those requirements should be established before the platform is selected.

Can lighting control be retrofitted without chasing walls?

Sometimes. Wireless or hybrid controls may reduce new cabling, but the existing wiring, back-boxes, loads, drivers, neutral availability, device locations and radio conditions still need to be surveyed. A low-disruption route cannot be guaranteed before that assessment.

Who decides the dimming protocol and drivers?

The lighting designer, electrical designer, control specialist and product supplier need a coordinated decision. The selected fitting and driver must be compatible with the proposed control method, and that compatibility should be recorded before procurement.

Can you repair a system you did not install?

Yes, subject to a survey and safe access to the installed equipment and records. The first task is to identify the system and isolate the cause rather than assume that the control processor is at fault.

Do you work with the project electrician?

Yes. Lighting control relies on coordinated electrical design and installation. Responsibilities for circuits, panels, containment, power, data, drivers, testing and commissioning should be clear before work starts.

Technical and project claims remain evidence-gated

Manufacturer status, named qualifications and project delivery claims are not used here until the owning legal entity, current evidence and approved wording have been recorded. Relevant case studies will be connected after their technical scope, attribution, privacy and image rights pass review.

Plan the lighting control before the details are fixed

Send the project stage, property type, postcode and any lighting layouts, circuit schedules or fitting information already available. For an existing system, photographs of keypads and panels are useful.
