Flicker after changing lamps does not automatically mean the whole lighting-control system needs replacing. The lamp or LED driver, dimming method, connected load, configuration and installation can all matter. A useful first step is to identify the affected circuit and the exact equipment fitted.

Record the symptoms before arranging a visit

Note which lights are affected, whether the behaviour happens at full brightness or only when dimmed, and whether it began after a lamp, driver or programming change. A short video can help describe intermittent behaviour. Record product labels where they are safely accessible; electrical enclosures and live wiring should be examined by a qualified person.

Check the complete combination

A lamp described as dimmable is not a guarantee that it will work well with every control. The lamp or driver and control equipment need an appropriate dimming interface, operating range and connected load. The correct settings also depend on the particular products.

Lutron's manufacturer troubleshooting guidance describes compatibility as a possible cause of LED flicker and noise. That guidance concerns the specified product; it is not a universal instruction for every UK installation. The installer should use the documentation for the actual system, lamp and driver.

Repair, adjust or replace?

  • A local problem: a particular lamp, driver, circuit or configuration may justify a targeted correction after diagnosis.
  • A wider lighting change: a refurbishment can require a review of load types, interfaces, circuit grouping and the control equipment.
  • An inherited system: establish the generation, available programming records, condition and support requirements before agreeing an upgrade route.

Replacing a control system without establishing the cause can leave a lamp or driver problem unresolved. Equally, retaining every component is not always practical. The recommendation should explain the evidence, the proposed work and how the resulting operation will be checked.

What to include in an enquiry

Tell us the system make and approximate age, rooms affected, recent changes and whether the issue is constant or intermittent. If you have drawings, circuit schedules or previous service notes, mention them. Avoid sending passwords or personal account credentials in the form.
