Lighting Design for a New Home: Why It Must Start Before First Fix

A beautiful lighting scheme begins with the architecture: where daylight falls, what deserves attention after dusk and how each room changes through the day. We bring those ideas into the early design conversations for a new home or major refurbishment, then carry them through to the final scenes.

Light is part of the architecture

Good lighting brings out the character of a staircase, gives a living room depth and makes everyday activities comfortable. We start with the experience: what should the room feel like, and what would you like to do there? That guides the fittings, positions and scenes.

We begin with the architecture and interiors: ceiling heights, wall finishes, joinery, artwork, glazing, furniture positions and sightlines. Then we consider layers—general light for movement, focused light for reading or preparation, and accent light that gives materials and details their presence. Good design lets those layers work independently. A scene can bring them together without asking anyone to operate a row of switches.

Lighting can make an evening room feel warm and welcoming. We balance the layers around the activities and finishes, then review the result with you in the completed interior. The aim is a home that looks right and feels comfortable to use.

One home, several moments

Picture arriving at a London townhouse on a winter evening. The entrance is already safe and legible. One Home scene brings the chosen rooms up gently rather than flooding every floor with light. Warm light settles across the sitting room; the kitchen becomes ready for supper; window blinds lower to soften the view from the street. Later, a Reading scene gives a chair the light it needs without flattening the rest of the room. For a family film, a Cinema scene lets the picture take priority while retaining enough low-level light to move safely.

None of those moments requires a theatrical “smart home” effect. The pleasure is in the precision: the right circuits, at the right levels, in the right order. In our film, the rising light and lowering blinds are shown as one composed sequence. The particular timing, brightness, shade fabric and control behaviour in a real home would be designed, commissioned and agreed for that property.

Daylight and privacy are part of the same brief

Large windows bring daylight and views into the home. Planning shading alongside the lighting lets us coordinate glare control, privacy, blind pockets and power routes with the architecture. The room can then feel comfortable from the brightest part of the day through to the evening.

We coordinate the blind type and fabric with the interior scheme, then work through window dimensions, recess depths, power, control, sightlines and the exact bottom position. Where multiple blinds form one elevation, their movement should be considered together. Why the first-fix stage matters

After walls are closed, ceilings finished and joinery ordered, a lighting idea can become an expensive compromise. Early coordination makes the design buildable. It allows the team to agree luminaire positions, circuit groupings, compatible drivers, dimming method, cable routes, panel space, keypad locations and blind provision before those choices are buried.

A design-team conversation, not a last-minute handover

For the architect, lighting sits alongside glazing, ceilings, risers and the construction programme. For the interior designer, it connects with materials, furniture, artwork and window treatments. We bring those decisions together in drawings, schedules and clear circuit and control information for the installation team.

A useful pre-first-fix meeting brings five decisions together: the activities in each room, the lighting layers, the blind positions and power, the details to conceal or align, and the final scene-setting visit. Drawings establish the scheme; tuning the completed rooms gives it its finished character.

Commissioning is where the design becomes real

Programming is part of finishing the home. We test the dimming, set scene levels, check transitions and shading positions, then walk through the controls with the client. As worktops, artwork and furniture arrive, we refine the settings around the completed interior.

The result should be a home that feels effortless because its engineering has been attended to.
