What Is KNX and What Can It Do for Your Home?

A practical introduction to KNX lighting, heating, shading and controls, with advice for new installations and existing-system takeovers.

KNX is a home and building automation standard that lets compatible products from different manufacturers communicate within a designed system. It can bring lighting, heating, shading and other functions into a coordinated installation while offering a broad choice of visible controls and equipment.

Lighting and room scenes

A KNX keypad can recall several lighting settings for a room. Sensors and schedules can add automatic behaviour where it is useful, while local controls give people a familiar way to make adjustments. The selected actuators, drivers and fittings determine the lighting functions available.

Heating, cooling and shading

Room temperature controllers, heating actuators and suitable interfaces can form part of the KNX design. Blinds and shading can also respond to agreed commands and schedules. We coordinate those functions with the mechanical and window-treatment specialists so the room experience and the physical installation agree.

A choice of manufacturers

The range includes products from manufacturers such as Gira, Jung, Theben and ABB, alongside many other KNX members. That gives the designer useful choices for keypads, sensors and control equipment. Each product is selected for its role in the project, including its application and communication requirements.

KNX’s official overview describes the standard and its applications. ETS is the engineering software used to configure devices and their relationships.

Bringing KNX into a wider home

KNX can work alongside a separate AV or home-control platform through a supported, designed interface. At Woodrow, GLO Audio Visual’s work retained KNX heating and mechanical integration while moving the lighting to Lutron. This gave the systems distinct roles within the home.

Taking over an existing KNX installation

We identify the equipment, review the available ETS project and access information, and test the functions the client uses. From there we can prepare a plan for repairs, improved controls, upgrades and ongoing care.
