Understand the building controls before changing the building.
A KNX home can contain switches, sensors, actuators and interfaces from several manufacturers. The name on the visible wall control may not identify the equipment operating the lighting, shading or heating. A takeover therefore starts with the installed functions and the available ETS project, rather than a recommendation to replace everything with one brand.
For lighting and shading, we review how room controls relate to the installed loads and functions. For heating and climate, the assessment must also establish the boundary between KNX control and the mechanical equipment it commands. We coordinate that boundary with the relevant specialist where needed, rather than assuming a control-system visit covers servicing the plant.
Tell us about Gira, Theben, Jung, ABB, MDT, Zennio or other KNX equipment already in the home. The exact models, programming, interfaces and access determine the proposed support. An installation can be documented and assessed without pretending every missing project or Secure key is recoverable. Any reconstruction or major upgrade needs a separate, explained scope.

Understand each subsystem
Map lighting and dimming, blind or curtain actuators, room sensors, heating valves, HVAC gateways, schedules and visualisation. Agree mechanical and specialist-system boundaries so changes to one function do not disrupt another.
Many brands, one reviewed installation
Gira, Theben, JUNG, ABB, MDT, Zennio, Basalte and other KNX manufacturers may coexist. We identify exact devices, application versions and gateways; a shared KNX label does not guarantee every proposed feature or replacement is interchangeable.
Recognise the installation behind the controls
KNX bus cable from the existing product library. Cable identification is one part of the survey; it does not establish the programming, installed functions or condition of the system.
A takeover built around your installation
Gira visualisation or logic, a heating gateway and the KNX bus may each have their own configuration and access requirements. We review them together, including manufacturer-specific applications and the interface to the wider home. Where lighting is moving to Lutron and KNX remains for heating or mechanical controls, the retained responsibilities and user controls need an explicit plan.
Retained KNX controls at Woodrow
GLO Audio Visual's Woodrow project retained KNX heating and mechanical controls while lighting moved to Lutron HomeWorks QS, with Savant coordinating the wider experience. It is a useful example of selective system change and the need to keep retained services correctly presented.
The first visit and what follows
We agree an engineer assessment before taking responsibility for ongoing care. The outcome is a practical system record and a prioritised proposal: retain, stabilise, recover and improve. Available configuration is protected before changes, and work affecting occupied rooms is planned with you.
Your KNX takeover questions
Can KNX heating remain while the lighting changes?
That can be a valid design approach, as the documented Woodrow project illustrates. It depends on the installed wiring, devices and interfaces. We map those dependencies and the controls the household needs before proposing a change; it is not a universal conversion recipe.
Can you take over KNX if the ETS project is missing?
We can assess the installation and look for legitimate backups or exports. Recovery of a damaged existing project differs from reconstructing a missing project from the building. Secure devices and missing credentials can add constraints; feasibility and any reconstruction work are agreed before changes.
Can I request an SLA before you visit?
Yes. Tell us the care approach you prefer. We then assess the installation and propose the scope, monitoring options, response arrangements and price. An enquiry does not activate support or book an engineer automatically.
